FootSense

Problem Overview

After a sensitive foot & leg injury, it is common practice for doctors or nurses to place a package of crackers under your recovery boot and cast and tell you not to break it. That is their recommended pressure level. Patients need to apply some pressure to the injury but not too much and struggle with understanding “apply 20% of your body weight to the injury”.

That”s where FootSense comes in.

Market Opportunity

Insurance companies are financially motivated to reduce the number of follow-up surgeries for sensitive foot & leg injuries. Follow-up surgeries can be reduced by applying the right amount of pressure (scheduled to be proven in a clinical trial in April 2020 - cancelled due to Covid).  FootSense had the potential to save insurance companies millions of dollars every year by reducing the number of necessary follow-up surgeries.

Produt Value Proposition

FootSense provides a platform and a smart orthopedic boot that is able to provide real-time feedback on optimal pressure levels and therefore aims to reduce recovery time for foot & leg injuries.

Features (and Epics in Jira)

  1. Software Interface for communication and transparency of recover journey between doctor and patient (and physical therapist)
  2. Sensor system to detect pressure levels
  3. Vibration feature to provide real-time feedback to the patient
  4. Bluetooth to connect the hardware and software interface
  5. Power Button and battery

Traction

  • Built Partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital: Head of Orthopedic Surgery scheduled the clinical trial for beginning of FDA approval for April 2020 (cancelled due to Covid)
  • Customer Intent to Purchase: Insurance companies, like 3M, and hospitals showed significant interest in purchasing the product, in addition to tech-driven physical therapists.
  • VC and Acquisition Calls: a large orthopedic device manufacturer in Germany scheduled conversations for acquisition and Boston-based IoT VC fund wanted to be the lead investor for the pre-seed round.
  • Product Innovation Award  Babson College graciously gifted us the ‘Product Innovation Award’ and the acceptance into their in-house startup accelerator.
